The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that sparked debate throughout his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors after the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core platform, was not quick to announce his residency plans promptly following his electoral win in November.

"My choice rested on our family's safety and the imperative to directing my full attention on implementing the affordability agenda New Yorkers elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community renowned for its vibrant immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, the community will continue to reside inside me and my efforts as mayor," he said.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

But his critics, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the apartment although he hails from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his private home on the Upper East Side during his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it should be a place for public city functions, and championed a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting a stark contrast to his humble Astoria digs.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's original era.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the price of rent outpaces what many can afford.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
