Strong winter gusts caused walls to collapse onto flimsy shelters housing people displaced by conflict in Gaza, killing at least 4 people. This tragedy underscores the dangerous living conditions that persist after more than two years of devastating bombardment and severe lack of aid.

Truce Offers No Respite from Severe Weather

Although a ceasefire has been active from October, aid groups state that Palestinians broadly lack the adequate housing necessary to survive frequent winter storms.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which took in the bodies, said on Tuesday that the dead were a pair of adult females, a girl, and a man.

In a separate incident, the local health authority stated on the same day that a 12-month-old infant succumbed of extreme cold during the night.

"International actors has enabled us to witness loss of life in all its forms," stated Bassel Hamouda following the funeral. "While it is correct the bombing may have paused for now, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Shelter Collapse

According to Shifa hospital, 3 members of a single household — 72-year-old Mohamed Hamouda, his teenage granddaughter, and his son's wife — were fatally injured when an 26-foot high wall collapsed onto their tent in a coastal area of the city. No fewer than five others were hurt in the event.

Family members on Tuesday started clearing the debris that had buried their loved ones and rebuilding the tent shelters for survivors.

Aid Distribution and Continuing Crisis

United Nations agencies and its aid organization allies were handing out tents, plastic sheeting, blankets and clothes as well as nutrition and hygiene items across Gaza, said the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

The majority of the population live in makeshift tents since their homes were turned into rubble during the hostilities. Humanitarian organizations contend not enough building supplies are entering Gaza under the truce.

Fatality Numbers Since the Truce

The Gaza health ministry, part of the Hamas-run government, says over four hundred and forty individuals have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their bodies brought to hospitals since the ceasefire began. Those figures, he said, reflected incidents where enough details had been compiled to warrant documentation, but the total toll is expected to be greater. He noted that many hundreds of children had been injured.

"While 'bombings and gunfire have decreased' under the ceasefire, they have not ceased," Elder told journalists at a UN briefing in Geneva by video from the Strip. "Therefore what the international community now calls quiet would be considered a catastrophe in any other place," he said.

Another Cold Season of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of more than 2 million people has been struggling to keep the cold weather and bad weather away while facing lack of humanitarian aid and a absence of more substantial transitional shelter, which is urgently required throughout the winter months. It’s the 3rd cold season after the conflict involving the state and the group began on a date in late 2023, when fighters stormed into southern Israel and killed around twelve hundred individuals and took hostage 251 others into Gaza.

The local health authority says more than 71,400 people have been fatally injured in Israel’s military campaign.
