The people of Israel mark two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace negotiations continue
Israelis have come together around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-conducted attack on October 7th, 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over an end to the war in Gaza.
The incident resulted in more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel responded by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"The aggressive adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will never again create a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed formal commemorations until mid-October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of people who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was observed throughout the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas representatives convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to review the conditions of the proposal.
A high-ranking Palestinian official knowledgeable about the discussions said that an evening round of mediated discussions commenced at 7 PM local time.
The official stated the morning session ended without significant progress, because of disagreements over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the agreement.
He commented that the negotiations are "tough and have still not deliver any significant progress," but noted that mediators are working hard to reduce the differences between the two sides.
Critical Matters in Discussions
- A permanent truce
- The trade of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for assistance provision
- Post-war management of the area
Citizen Feeling
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, young a woman - whose brother endured the attack on the outdoor event, where hundreds were murdered and many more were abducted by Hamas militants - shared: "No location appears as home any longer and until every captive come back no one will be secure."
"After we see everybody home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can begin to rebuild," she concluded.
Near the prime minister's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their backing for the relatives of the hostages. Israel states forty-eight continue in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be alive.
Protester a participant remarked: "It's necessary do every compromise necessary for the captives to be released. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be protected."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that around the majority of the population desire the conflict to finish in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.
Gaza Conditions
At the location of the gathering, grieving people assembled to honor the dead.
From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers indicated the severe Israeli bombardment persisted.
In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the dawn of Tuesday in the western district, Rimal and zone areas and in the east side neighbourhood of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwest.
"As the evening comes, the fear appears with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli bombing earlier, explained.
"We are afraid of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, particularly my smallest child who puts his head on me all night."
"Continuously we check the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be finalized and that the fighting will come back to us."
Health Emergency
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had received the bodies of several people by the daytime, including three killed in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the south region of the city said another two fatalities had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while attempting to get help to the southern area, medical staff said.
