The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed sci-fi show wrapping up—and Season 2 already in development—the creative team reflected on the fan response and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Fan Response
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“It's like being constantly eating your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Will the creator Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by fan response, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… sort of.
“There are some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” he states. “but we are always ready to throw out a decent plan for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, why not reference the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
