Last year, star Jude Law remarked he had no concerns about backlash for playing Vladimir Putin in a cinematic adaptation. The movie, however, could coincide too neatly with the mythologized version circulated by Russian state media that, domestically, it reads as a compliment instead of a critique.

The Crafted Strongman

For years, the Russian political apparatus and the country's entertainment industry have worked together to forge a tailor-made persona of the president. This figure is an infallible strategist without age or mistakes, a former spy reframed as a Russian James Bond who always knows more than he reveals.

Screen-Based Support

A notable instance is a television show launched last fall, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. The protagonist is a invented security officer inexplicably chosen to “save” the nation from disorder. While he is called a different name, the message is clear: the hero must be a known figure from the secret services.

Western portrayals often end up reinforcing this identical story instead of debunking it. A new film inspired by a bestselling satirical novel aims to undermine the Putin cult by presenting him as a symptom but as a consequence, shifting the focus to the political machinery surrounding him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, the president is shown as having been picked by influential figures to stabilise the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to become president. He replies is that he would rather govern from the background, seeking enduring influence.

This tale is the Kremlin’s export myth: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. Historically, these events ever happened.

The Reality of the Casting Call

Nobody actually pleaded with Putin to take the job. The presidency was effectively a casting call with many candidates. At the centre to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who expected to run the state de facto.

• Per a journalist who studied his rise, the future president merely met the necessary criteria: obedient, from the intelligence world, and politically neutral.

Analysts concur that the image of Putin as a master operative was constructed retrospectively. Stories about his clandestine activities in East Germany do not stand up to scrutiny. In essence, he was an administrator and technical tasks, a low-level clerk not engaged in actual agent work.

Interestingly, the move to depicting him as a “spy” could partly have been triggered by Daniel Craig’s arrival as James Bond. His harder version prompted local outlets and social media to make comparisons with Putin. Mashup posters replacing the actor's likeness with his surfaced on city centers, fueling the increasing trend to see him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an actor well-liked by viewers there, the Kremlin will not miss the chance to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. Its exclusion of public dissent, the political rivals, or key figures in the story, despite covering the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for official messaging.

Domestically, the president is frequently an omnipotent figure who remains unseen on screen. His influence is signaled through portraits or orders from on high. In this new film, he finally acquires a recognizable face—one that could unintentionally validate the exact legends it perhaps aims to examine.
