King to Broadcast First-Hand Address on His Health Battle in Nationwide Address
His Majesty has filmed a personal message concerning his journey with cancer, scheduled for transmission as part of this year's Stand Up To Cancer initiative, run by medical research organisations and Channel 4.
Official sources said the King would discuss his "healing process" as a person living with the disease, in a televised statement on this Friday at 20:00 GMT.
The address, taped inside his London residence recently, will emphasise the critical nature of preventative health checks to ensure more people detect the disease at an initial point.
This will be a rare update on the medical condition of the Sovereign, who has been receiving ongoing care since his condition was announced in early last year. But it is thought unlikely the King will specify his specific form of cancer.
Fundraising Primary Goal
The annual charity campaign each year raises funds for scientific studies and treatment and urges people to get check-ups to increase the odds of an prompt identification.
The King's candid approach about his condition, and living with cancer, has been intended to promote education and to encourage more people to get screened - and this will be escalated with this unusual direct participation.
Up until now the King's key philosophy to his cancer has been to maintain his duties, preserving a full diary alongside his regular rounds of treatment, and he appears not to have wanted to be defined by his illness.
The past twelve months has seen the King, 77, undertaking several overseas trips, including to Italy and Canada, and hosting the largest volume of inward state visits to the UK for decades, featuring the German president last week.
Friday's Broadcast Event
The upcoming awareness show on Channel 4, featuring celebrities such as several TV personalities, will urge people not to be frightened of getting health screenings.
All three have been personally touched by cancer - Davina McCall said recently she had received treatment for breast cancer, while Clare Balding was diagnosed with thyroid cancer more than 15 years ago. Comedian Adam Hills has previously mentioned his parent, who had a diagnosis and then later blood cancer.
The show will appeal to the estimated 9m people in the UK who Cancer Research UK says are not current with public health checks, with an online checker to let people see if they are able for tests for key health indicators.
In an attempt to demystify cancer checks and demonstrate the benefit of timely identification there will be a direct feed from cancer clinics at two Cambridge hospitals in Cambridge.
"I want to take the fear surrounding preventative tests and prove the public that they are not on their own in this," stated a presenter.
The Landscape of Health Checks
At present in the UK, there are several key publicly available checks - for specific cancers - available to eligible individuals.
A new scheme for lung health is also being phased in for people at high risk of being diagnosed with the disease, primarily aimed at people of a certain age, who have a smoking history or were former smokers.
Male patients may request prostate cancer checks, but there is not a universal scheme in place.
Charitable Impact
The Stand Up to Cancer campaign, which has collected over one hundred million pounds over the past decade, is funding multiple clinical trials encompassing 13,000 patients.
The Monarch, in a address for guests at a reception for cancer charities in the spring, had discussed acknowledging the "intimidating and at times alarming situation" for cancer sufferers and their families.
But he said his personal journey of managing cancer had shown him that "periods of great challenge of disease can be brightened by the kindness of others," as he commended those who supported cancer patients.
Royal representatives has not revealed the specific type of cancer the King has, or the therapies he has received. The King's cancer was discovered following he had undergone a medical treatment.
