Jimmy Cliff, Music Legend and Cultural Figure, Passes Away at Eighty-One Years Old
Global audiences grieves the passing of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican musician and actor whose distinctive vocal talent was instrumental in spreading the reggae genre across the globe. The artist passed away at the age of eighty-one.
“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure episode and subsequent pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa on social media. “I am thankful for his loved ones, friends, fellow artists and colleagues who shared his life’s path. To all his fans globally, please know that your encouragement was his strength throughout his entire professional life … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will honor your wishes.” The message was co-signed by their offspring, Lilty and Aken.
Jimmy Cliff was beloved for hits including You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His optimistic musical style and uplifting spirit brought him a large and longstanding following.
In addition to his music accomplishments, Cliff starred in the 1972 crime drama The Harder They Come, a role that received critical praise and is viewed as a landmark of film in Jamaica.
Jimmy Cliff is among the select few of musicians, alongside Bob Marley and other greats, to be awarded the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
