Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.

“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that reassures me, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police released security footage Monday of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims were reported.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday in the area between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
