International Committee of the Red Cross Accompanies Militant Group in Search for Bodies of Israeli Hostages in Gaza

A Red Cross official confirmed that its personnel joined members of Hamas into zones of Gaza currently controlled by Israeli military control to support the hunt for the remains of Israeli hostages.

Truce Agreements and Captive Bodies Handover

As part of the truce negotiated by the United States, which took effect on October 10, Hamas is required to hand over the remains of all captives promptly. As a reciprocal measure, Israel has agreed to hand over 15 Palestinian bodies for every Israeli body returned.

Hamas has to date handed back the remains of 15 of those taken hostage but zero in the last five days, as a portion of those bodies are thought to be in locations past the yellow line designating the temporary truce line.

ICRC Involvement as Impartial Facilitator

“Upon the appeal of the involved sides, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) accompanied a party to the conflict as the party searched for the bodies of the deceased individuals beyond the military-established ‘yellow boundary’,” said a spokesperson for the organization.

She continued: “Those involved to the conflict determined the modalities of the mission and delegated the Red Cross to act as a impartial mediator. The ICRC was had no part in the discussions.”

The official further explained: “The ICRC was did not participate in the physical hunt for the deceased nor does it engage in the physical recovery of remains.”

American Ultimatum and Local Search Efforts

On Saturday, the US president delivered a two-day demand to the militant group. “Hamas is going to have to begin returning the remains of the deceased hostages, which include two Americans, quickly, or the other countries involved in this great peace will intervene,” he posted on his social‑media platform.

When the two-day window approached, Hamas, accompanied by the ICRC, joined Egyptian teams, who were authorised by Israeli authorities to look for remains past the line indicating the withdrawal of troops inside Gaza. An official representative said the Egyptian team would use heavy machinery and trucks in the search.

This development was corroborated by an source within Israel, who told Hebrew-language media that members of the group had been permitted to access sections of Gaza under Israel Defense Forces (IDF) control to search for the remains of captives, together with Egyptian and ICRC teams.

Footage published by a media outlet seemed to show members of a Hamas unit – belonging to the organization’s military wing responsible for guarding captives – escorting a Red Cross vehicle in a coastal area near Rafah, which is beyond Israeli military control.

Challenges in Locating Hostage Bodies

Efforts to locate for the remains of individuals taken captive has become one of the most sensitive matters in the ceasefire reached between the two sides. Yet, the attempt to find the bodies has proved challenging from the outset, given the existence of an estimated 60m tonnes of rubble across the territory, where, according to local health authorities, at least 10,000 Palestinians are recorded as missing, buried under the debris.

Diverging Statements on Body Location

The group has stated it does not know the exact whereabouts of all the remains, saying it has lost contact with several of its teams that had been holding the hostages and were allegedly eliminated during Israeli bombardments.

However, an Israeli government spokesperson asserted that Hamas knew the locations of the remains. “Should the group made more of an effort, they would be able to recover the remains of our hostages,” the spokesperson said.

American Position and Weapons Surrender Talks

Although the US president has acknowledged that some of the bodies are difficult to access, he said that “the rest they can hand over immediately and, for unknown reasons, they are not.”
