Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "They were part of thousands of British personnel deployed over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
