The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect behind some of the most iconic looks worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, most notably the pastel suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as a number of outfits for her US tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry says farewell to a true visionary whose impact on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
