Barry Manilow to Undergo an Operation for Lung Cancer.
Barry Manilow announced that he received a diagnosis with lung cancer and is set to have surgery.
Cancer Caught Early
The legendary 82-year-old artist, known for a string of upbeat chart-toppers from "Mandy" established him as one of pop music’s enduringly popular performers, will have surgery to extract a portion of his lung in an effort to treat the illness, which is detected early.
“For those who have been following, I recently went through six weeks of a severe cough followed by a relapse of another five weeks.
“Despite the fact that I was recovered from the illness and returned to the spotlight at the Westgate Las Vegas, my wonderful doctor requested an MRI just to be certain that all was clear.
“The MRI identified a malignant lesion on my lung that requires removed. It’s sheer fortune (and a fantastic physician) that it was discovered so early.”
Rescheduled Shows
He has postponed a series of forthcoming concerts, but stated he would be returning to perform by the February holiday for his enduring residency in Las Vegas.
He continued: “The doctors do not believe it has traveled and I’m having examinations to confirm their diagnosis. So, that’s it. No chemo. No radiation. Just home remedies and classic TV.
“I’m eagerly awaiting until I return to my home away from home for our Vegas run for our Valentine’s weekend concerts.”
Decades in the Spotlight
Manilow is currently in the 16th year of a concert series at the Westgate Las Vegas. The singer has enjoyed a career spanning many years in the limelight and revealed he is gay in 2017, after marrying his manager and long-term partner in secret in 2014.
The duo were in a private relationship for in excess of 35 years. Last year, Manilow discussed how vital his partner had been to him during his explosion in popularity in the 1970s.
“During my rapid rise to fame, it was just hectic. And, you know, coming home to an vacant room, you can get into a lot of problems if you, you know, you’re by yourself repeatedly,” he said.
“But I encountered my future husband right around when it was exploding. And I was spared from having to go back to those lonesome rooms. I had somebody to share sorrows with or to celebrate with.
“I desire that aspiring artists don’t have to go back to those rooms by themselves, because you get yourself in trouble. I never did. But it was pretty lonely until I met Garry. And then it was joyful.”
