American Armed Forces Conducts Deadly Attack in Pacific, Resulting in Four Fatalities
As stated by a senior military spokesperson, the American military executed a lethal strike on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, killing four people.
“A US joint task force carried out a deadly attack on a vessel linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Surveillance verified the vessel was transiting along a established narco-trafficking route and was involved in illicit drug transport. A total of four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no US military forces were harmed.”
Background and Prior Actions
The statement follows a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on social media, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, vowing to escalate the military presence.
Only on the previous day, US defense officials stated it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Beginning on 2 September, more than 20 strikes have killed at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Justifies Actions Amid Scrutiny
The administration has encountered increasing demands to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, the defense secretary have declined to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a successful operation, arguing it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the limits of lawful warfare.
While the administration has stated the operation is about stopping drugs destined for the US, remarks from a senior aide seemed to suggest a wider geopolitical aim. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff said the leader “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”
This indicates the military campaign may be linked to a push to remove Venezuela's sitting government.
