Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family go about their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
